How to Compare Written Treatment Estimates

Questions to ask about the treatment scope, assumptions, inclusions, exclusions and payment terms in a hospital estimate.

Request a case-specific written estimate

Ask the hospital to describe the proposed treatment or consultation and the information used to prepare the estimate. An estimate made before the clinical team reviews all relevant records may rely on assumptions that change after assessment.

Check the date of the estimate and whether the provider states how long its terms remain valid. Ask who to contact if the plan or price needs to be revised.

Compare the same items

Two totals are only comparable when you understand what each one covers. Ask the provider to list relevant inclusions and exclusions, such as:

  • Consultation, procedure and professional fees, and the hospital stay or room category assumed.
  • Tests, medicines, implants or devices, intensive-care needs and follow-up visits.
  • Rehabilitation, additional nights or services that may be recommended after treatment.
  • Items that are not included and situations that could lead to extra charges.

Clarify payment and change terms

Confirm the currency, payment recipient, accepted payment methods, deposit or advance, and any taxes or other charges. Ask what happens if the treatment plan changes, the patient needs a longer stay, or an appointment is cancelled or rescheduled.

Read the provider’s written payment, refund and cancellation terms before sending money. Do not assume that a verbal estimate, general price range or enquiry is a final quote.

Keep travel costs separate

A hospital estimate may not include flights, visa fees, accommodation, local transport, meals, an attendant’s expenses or insurance. Plan these separately and confirm each cost with the responsible provider or authority.

Prices and clinical plans vary by patient and provider. This guide is a comparison checklist, not a treatment recommendation, hospital quote or guarantee of cost.
