Understanding Cardiac Surgery Costs in India

A practical checklist for comparing written cardiac-surgery estimates without mistaking a public scheme rate or estimate for a hospital quote.

There is no case-specific price in this guide

The cost of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) or valve surgery must be quoted by the selected hospital after its clinical team reviews the patient. The procedure, combined operations, investigations, room category, expected admission and individual health needs may affect the estimate. This guide does not publish a VStake price or promise a package.

The Government of India’s CGHS schedule is a scheme-specific rate reference, not a private hospital quote or a price guarantee for an international patient. Do not compare it as if it covered the same provider, patient eligibility or package terms.

Ask for each part of the estimate in writing

Ask the hospital to state what its estimate includes and excludes, the room category and number of days assumed, how long the quote is valid, and what happens if the patient needs additional care. These are questions to ask the provider; they are not claims that every hospital package includes the same items.

  • Surgeon, anaesthesia, operating theatre and procedure charges
  • Pre-operative consultations, tests and imaging
  • Intensive-care and ward stay, including the number of days assumed
  • Medicines, blood products, devices or implants, and any rehabilitation listed
  • Additional tests, longer admission, intensive care or other changes to the treatment plan
  • Taxes, payment milestones, cancellation terms and costs not related to hospital care, such as flights and accommodation

Compare like with like

A CABG estimate is not automatically comparable with a combined CABG-and-valve procedure or another cardiac operation. Ask each hospital to identify the proposed procedure, planned care, exclusions and clinical assumptions in the same level of detail. Have a qualified cardiologist or cardiac surgeon explain the clinical options and risks for the individual patient.

The NHS patient guide explains how CABG is performed, recovery and possible complications. It is general patient information, not a recommendation for any particular patient or a source of Indian hospital prices.

Keep the clinical and travel decision case-specific

Only the treating team can assess whether surgery is appropriate, what tests or support are needed, and whether travel is medically safe. Obtain the written clinical plan and itemised estimate, ask what could change them, and confirm follow-up and recovery arrangements before making travel or payment decisions.

This guide is for financial planning questions only. It is not medical advice, and treatment outcomes, eligibility, final charges and travel fitness are not guaranteed.
