Medical Travel Checklist: What to Confirm Before Leaving for India

A step-by-step planning list for confirming appointments, official travel requirements, records and practical arrangements before departure.

Confirm the hospital plan

Before booking travel, confirm the hospital, department, appointment date, expected next steps and the documents the care team wants to review. Ask how long the patient may need to remain nearby and whom to contact if the appointment changes.

Discuss fitness to travel and any care-related travel precautions with the treating clinician. Do not use a general checklist as medical clearance to fly.

Check current visa and entry requirements

Visa category, supporting documents, appointment procedures and processing times can depend on the traveller’s circumstances and application location. Check the current instructions with the official Indian visa portal and the Indian mission serving your country. Confirm separate requirements for each accompanying traveller.

Also verify transit, passport-validity and any health-document requirements that apply to your route and dates. A hospital invitation or submitted application is not a visa approval.

Organize documents and practical support

Keep essential information available in both printed and digital form. Before departure, confirm:

  • Passports, visas, appointment or invitation documents, medical reports, prescriptions and emergency contacts.
  • Whether medical records need translation and which originals or image files the hospital expects.
  • Accommodation dates, the exact hospital location, local transport and how to reach the provider after hours.
  • Who is travelling with the patient, how costs will be handled and what support the attendant may need.

Wait for confirmations before paying

Get written confirmation of the hospital appointment, travel permissions, transport or accommodation bookings, prices and cancellation terms from the organization responsible for each item. Keep a backup contact plan for delays or schedule changes.

Requirements and availability can change. Recheck official travel instructions and provider arrangements close to departure, and contact the relevant authority or care team when anything is unclear.
